APPROXIMATELY 200 PERSONS affected by Hurricane Emily last week are still in six shelters in three parishes, the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) reported yesterday.
Sophia Mitchell, a spokesperson for ODPEM, told The Gleaner that Trelawny had the most people in shelters with a total of 108 at the Holland High School and Bunkers Hill in Unity.
Kingston and St. Andrew accommodates 81 persons with the New Testament Church of God, in Bull Bay, acting as temporary home to 42. Another 33 are at a residence in Kingston and six at Summerset.
The Yallahs Primary School in St. Thomas is the other functioning shelter. It currently houses 10 persons.
Ms. Mitchell said 3,000 shelters were opened to help persons affected by Hurricane Emily and Hurricane Dennis, which impacted the island the previous week.
The island survived the brunt of both hurricanes, though Emily caused extensive damage to parts of the south coast.
Ms. Mitchell said there were reports of flooding and landslides in Manchester and St. Elizabeth.
On Saturday, five persons including three children died in the community of Myersville in St. Elizabeth. They were swept over a ravine by a flash flood.
