Under-19 duo strike for Juniors
published: Thursday | July 21, 2005

CARDEL SIMPSON and Dennis Bulli shared six wickets for the Jamaica Under-19 team on yesterday's opening day of their three-day practice match against a Jamaica XI at Melbourne Oval.

Left-arm spinner Bulli took 3-25 and Simpson 3-55 as the Young Jamaicans bowled out their senior counterparts, led by West Indies batsman Wavell Hinds, for 202. At the close they were 112 for three.

The Under-19 bowlers made early inroads into the Jamaica XI batting and at one stage had them at 83-8, but Bevon Brown, 89, and Sheldon Smith, 40 not out, saved the day for their side by putting on 93 for the ninth wicket.

BROWN THE AGGRESSOR

Brown was the more aggressive as he hit seven fours and three sixes from 70 deliveries while Smith had three fours in his unbeaten knock.

Earlier, the top order of Wayne Gayle, seven, Dean Morgan, two, Tyson Gordon, 19, Maurice Clarke, 21, Gregory Buchanan, zero, Wavell Hinds, one, Gary Herbine, five, and Omar Burke, zero, all went cheaply.

In reply, Zeniffe Fowler, 22, and Nickoy Samuels, 24, put on 60 for the first wicket before they were dismissed. Ziggy Levy also chipped in with 23.

Captain Jamie Trenchfield, 18, and Albert Gopie, eight, will continue the Young Jamaicans' fight for honours today at 10:00 a.m.
