Sugar Company backs execs against Golding
published: Saturday | July 23, 2005

THE BOARD of the Sugar Company of Jamaica (SCJ) yesterday threw its support behind the present management team whose competence was questioned in Parliament on Tuesday.

A release from the SCJ also said it 'unanimously' endorsed the management of President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Livingstone Morrison.

On Tuesday, Opposition Leader Bruce Golding criticised the SCJ for being tardy in maintaining efficiency in the sugar industry. He questioned whether the entire management should not be fired.

Allan Rickards, chairman of the All Island Jamaica Cane Farmers' Association (AIJCFA), also agreed that the present SCJ management should be sent packing.

However, the release stated yesterday that in giving its endorsement, the board acknowledged the constraints of finances and staffing under which the SCJ is currently managed.

The SCJ said it also noted the complex set of issues relating to the sugar industry for which strong, methodical and consistent action was the solution. This had already begun, the board said.

The board added that it was further heartened by the strong support and endorsement the SCJ management has received from the heads of the National Workers' Union, the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union, the University and Allied Workers' Union and the Staff Association of the SCJ's Frome division.
