Lawmen on bribery rap
published: Saturday | July 23, 2005

TWO MORE policemen have been arrested for breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act, after they were alleged to have taken money from a motorist on Spanish Town Road in Kingston, on Thursday night.

The two constables join a growing list of policemen cited for breaches of the law.

According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), the policemen from the Police Area Four Headquarters were on mobile patrol when, at 7:50 p.m., they stopped the motorist on Spanish Town Road.

The policemen detected a traffic infraction and arrangements were made for a bribe to be paid and the charges dropped.

"In the interim, the Professional Standards Branch was contacted and a sting operation was set up," a spokesperson for the CCN said.

"The policemen were subsequently nabbed with money given to them by the motorist."

Earlier this month Police Commissioner Lucius Thomas said 21 policemen and women had been sent on leave following investigations into allegations of corruption. He said at least 19 other members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) had been sacked for various disciplinary reasons.

CRIMINAL CONVICTIONS

"Five of the members were dismissed for criminal convictions and 14 for unprofessional conduct, while 11 members were also fined in internal courts of inquiry," the police commissioner said during a press conference held last week at the Police Officers Club in St. Andrew.

He said the 21 police officers sent on leave were interdicted on charges ranging from bribery to breaches of the Corruption Prevention Act.
