THE EDITOR, Sir:
I RECENTLY visited Montego Bay, Jamaica, from Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S.A, and enjoyed getting to know the people of Jamaica. I was uplifted by the culture and spirit of the Jamaican people, but saddened by the poverty experienced by my brothers and sisters.
I noticed that many of the Montego Bay residents who sell their wares at the craft markets are overlooked by tourists, who are directed to the duty-free stores that I assume are owned and operated by non-Jamaicans. It would be good if some type of business arrangement could be made between the owners of the craft markets and the cruise ships and hotel owners, so that tourists would have an opportunity to meet and greet the multitalented people of Jamaica and buy their wares. I am grateful that my travel companion and I ventured off the commercial strip and went into the craft markets to experience the people, culture, and buy great products.
Since my return to the United States, I think of my visit to your country often. I am proud to share an African cultural heritage with Jamaicans, and will continue to keep Jamaica in my prayers. It is a beautiful country with heart and soul. God bless Jamaica and its wonderfully proud people. Irie!
