LINDA KELLY
LINDA KELLY is quite fond of her 'trusty Justy'. It is a common sight to see her zooming around May Pen in her vehicle, ferrying other senior citizens on errands.
"You know, twelve young men have been to me asking me to sell my car but I can't sell it. I love this car. I use it to run all my errands," Ms. Kelly, this year's GGAA awardee for Clarendon, said.
A devout member of the St. Gabriel's Anglican Church, she devotes her spare time to visiting the sick, shut-ins and the disabled.
"I offer to take them to the doctor, I go to the supermarket with them, I try to take care of all their little transportation needs," she said.
CARPOOLING FOR THE ELDERLY
In some circles, she is knownsotto voce as the "taxi woman" of senior citizens, transporting them on a regular basis, free of charge, to and from the doctors, the pharmacy, banks and supermarkets.
During her long and distinguished teaching career, Ms. Kelly has held various positions in schools across Jamaica and spent 16 years teaching in the Bahamas. She was also a member of the American Institute for Foreign Students.
"I really enjoyed my time in the Bahamas. I was able to travel abroad. I went to all the major countries in Europe, Germany, Spain, France, Russia, England, and even Kenya," said Ms. Kelly, who is fluent in Spanish.
She is an avid gardener, growing white and red roses, and has a charming collection of souvenirs from Russia, Hong Kong, Germany and Spain. She also collects classical, gospel and Dixieland music.
