White collar crimes
published: Tuesday | July 26, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THERE IS now a plague of crime and violence sweeping throughout our country. This epidemic of crime and lawlessness has spread like wild fire to every nook and cranny of this supposedly Christian country of ours. It has even stained the bright garments of justice, to the extent that almost everyone, especially the poor in our midst, now regards the justice system as having failed.

But while we focus our attention on murders and crimes using physical violence, we tend not to raise an alarm about what are commonly referred to as "white collar" crimes. These crimes are not only restricted to individuals who have been smitten by the "get rich quick" mentality; but even by some large oppressive companies, that try to "pull the wool" over the eyes of their customers, by what may best be described as the practising of "sleight of hand tricks". For example, there are some companies that for years accept payments from their customers to provide a stated service, in particular some insurance companies, but when the time comes for them to honour their obligations they try every trick to slither out of them.

Mr. Editor, these companies are only interested in plundering for themselves and not are sincere about providing genuine service for their customers.

I know that Commissioner Thomas' hands are full, but I do hope, that before long he will take full aim at these culprits who are just as dangerous as the gunmen in our midst.

I am, etc.,

A.S. JACKSON

Chapelton
