The worst road

THE EDITOR, Sir:
NO ONE would dispute the fact that the worst roads in Jamaica are in St. Mary, and the worst road in St. Mary is undoubtedly the Rio Nuevo to Gayle Road. Nevertheless, it has certain redeeming qualities for the motorist adventurous enough to travel this road. Apart from learning that after the experience (it is indeed a learning experience) he will need new shocks, he will be reminded mentally and anatomically (painfully reminded) that navigating the twists, turns and potholes is somewhat like overcoming life's obstacles with fortitude and perseverance (no pain, no gain). He will learn that interpersonal relationships, like potholes, are sometimes best avoided or in some situations treated.
Congratulations to those bureaucrats - assorted politicians, NWA officials and others too numerous to mention, who, over the years, have worked hard to maintain this road in its original pristine state while giving moral support with syrupy smiles and homespun homilies. Rumour has it that there are plans to designate this road a national treasure (oops, I almost said national disgrace).
I am, etc.,
