Summershine Put your children to work and transform and make a drab bedroom fabulous
published: Tuesday | July 26, 2005

Nashauna Drummond, Staff Reporter

LOOKING FOR ways to keep your children occupied for the rest of the summer? Get them to give their room a spring cleaning or, better yet, a whole new look. A bedroom makeover is sure to keep them busy while putting their creativity and ingenuity to work.

Local cable channel CETv!'s home improvement show 'I Can Do That', and interior designer Francine Chin of Adam's Design, Kingston, team up to show how to transform a child's room (or any bedroom, for that matter) from a cluttered jungle to a relaxing and organised space.

THE PROJECT

Five-year-old Zara Holmes' bedroom in Orange Grove, Stony Hill, St. Andrew, was a mess. The top of her desk was so crowded there was little room to actually work. The closet was bulging with clothes and other items; toys, games and books were strewn in some corners; and, to top it off Zara's scribbling were everywhere. She expressed herself freely, doodling on the bedroom door, walls, and chest of drawers.

Her aunt, Carlene Samuels, summed up the room in one word: "Bad".

Her mother, Andrea Samuels, was more graphic in the description of her daughter's room. "It was like one of the hurricanes passed through. Things were never in place. The biggest problem was making use of the small space." The room is 10 x 12, including the closet space.

CETv, the family network, is available through various cable providers in Kingston and St. Andrew, parts of St. Catherine and Ocho Rios. 'I Can Do That' is similar to HGTV's Design on a Dime and TLC's Trading Spaces.
