100m win for Campbell
published: Tuesday | July 26, 2005

CAMPBELL

OLYMPIC 200 metres champion Veronica Campbell, Davian Clarke and Vonette Dixon warmed up in Helsinki's World Championships Stadium yesterday with impressive victories.

Campbell, a bronze medal winner in the Olympic 100m final last summer, won yesterday's 100m in 11.12 seconds, ahead of American Muna Lee (11.39) and Angela Daigle (11.48).

In the men's 400m, Clarke raced to victory in 45.53, leaving in his wake Saudi Arabia's Hamdan Al-Bishi Hamdan (45.61) and Talkmore Nyongani Young of Zimbabwe (45.70).

Dixon, the 2002 Commonwealth Games silver medallist, justified her third place finish at the National Championships with victory in the women's 100m hurdles.

GOLDING-CLARKE FAILS TO FINISH

Dixon was timed in 12.85 seconds to finish ahead of American Virginia Powell (13.06) and Nadine Faustin-Parker of Haiti (13.08).

Lacena Golding-Clarke, who was fourth at the Jamaica trials, failed to finish.

Novlene Williams, 51.09, was fifth in the women's 400m, won by DeeDee Trotter of United States (50.39).

Shevon Stoddart's 56.90 was only good enough for seventh in the women's 400m hurdles. Sandra Glover of United States won the event in 54.27.

Dean Griffiths was eighth in the men's 400m hurdles in slow 51.25 seconds. Bayano Kamani of Panama won the event in 48.89.

Mardrea Hyman (4:07.96) and Hinds Korene (4:21.17) finished fifth and 10th respectively in the women's 1500m. The event went to American Lindsay Gallo in 4:06.03.
