Mayor to tour UWI sewage treatment plant
published: Wednesday | July 27, 2005

Gareth Manning, Gleaner Writer

MCKENZIE

KINGSTON'S MAYOR Desmond Mckenzie is scheduled to tour the University of the West Indies' sewage treatment facilities on Friday.

This follows allegations by Mayor Mckenzie two weeks ago that the university had been dumping waste into the Goldsmith gully in St. Andrew.

The allegations were followed by a 14-day ultimatum that should have ended today.

STANDING BY HIS COMMENTS

Mayor Mckenzie said he will be accompanied by a team from the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) at the university's invitation.

"We have to make sure that things are done in the correct fashion," the mayor said.

Mayor Mckenzie said that although the university has openly denied his allegations, he is still standing by his comments.

"I'm still going to stand by what I said, because I've gone down there and I have seen it for myself," the mayor told The Gleaner.

He said subsequent actions by the KSAC against the university would be decided on after the tour.
