CABINET HAS approved $2 billion for the implementation of phase two of the Lift-Up Jamaica project, which began this month.
Information Minister Senator Burchell Whiteman made the disclosure of the approval during Monday's regular post-Cabinet press briefing at Jamaica House.
"The projects that are incorporated on the Lift-Up Jamaica project include the social and physical environment of inner-city communities and the development of rural towns," he said.
The project is being financed by funds from the Caracas Energy Agreement Fund.
In May, Prime Minister P.J. Patterson announced a $2-billion allocation to resurrect the Lift-Up Jamaica programme, which was first introduced in 1999.
The programme had been introduced as a means to alleviate a severe job shortage in urban areas.
