Powell doubtful for World Champs
published: Wednesday | July 27, 2005

POWELL

WORLD RECORD holder for the 100m, Asafa Powell, remains a doubtful starter for next month's Helsinki World Athletics Championships.

Powell, who aggravated a groin muscle injury at last Friday's London Grand Prix meet, is still under treatment but could miss out on another opportunity for a championship medal.

The sprinter's agent, Paul Doyle was quoted on BCC website, yesterday as saying: "He has a two-and-a-half centimetre rip in the muscle and has started treatment.

"The doctor says it is possible Asafa will not be at 100 per cent (for the Championships), but he cannot predict it," the site quoted Doyle as saying.

The 22-year-old is being treated by German doctor Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt. Doyle said the Powell camp would be in a better position to say whether he would be able to make it to Helsinki within a week.

SPRINT TEAM

National 100m champion Powell, who sped to the world record 9.77 second mark on June 14, had earlier suffered a groin injury at the National Championships in late June.

Despite the uncertainty, manager Doyle said, on the site, that it was possible Powell could run as part of Jamaica's sprint relay team, even if he missed the individual event.

At the last World Championships, Powell was disqualified from the quarter-finals, while at last summer's Olympic Games in Athens, he finished fifth.
