Thomas, Hilton shine in Sweden
published: Wednesday | July 27, 2005

FIVE JAMAICANS secured top three finishes at yesterday's DN Galan IAAF Grand Prix in Stockholm, Sweden.

Sprinters Dwight Thomas, Michael Frater, quarter-miler Brandon Simpson, sprint hurdler Brigitte Foster-Hylton and long jumper Elva Goulbourne were the island's keading athletes.

Thomas, who pulled-up last week in London, returned to clock 10.19 seconds for second in the men's 100m A race, behind trainer partner, American Olympic champion Justin Gatlin (10.15). Frater was third in 10.30 seconds.

In the men's 100m B race, World Championships 200m silver medallist Christopher Williams clocked 10.17 seconds to win, ahead of countryman Ainsley Waugh (10.24).

Kurt Watson (10.81) was third in the C race while Winston Smith failed to finish.

Simpson's 45.18 seconds gave him second in the men's 400m, behind American Olympic champion Jeremy Wariner, who returned to his winning ways in 44.90.

Another American, Kerron Clement, was third in 45.31 while Sanjay Ayre was fifth in 45.91.

The silver medal in the women's 100m hurdles went to joint national champion Foster-Hylton in 12.78. Foster-Hylton, a silver medallist at the Paris World Championships, finished behind world champion Perdita Felicien of Canada (12.77).

Andrea Bliss (12.96) was sixth in the B race. Poland's Aurelia Trywianska (12.80) defeated Spain's Glory Alozie (12.81) for the top position.

WOES CONTINUE

In the men's high hurdles, Maurice Wignall woes continued as closed the gate in 13.47 seconds. Americans Anwar Moore (13.20) and David Oliver (13.23) finished one-two.

Goulbourne's leap of 6.48 metres was only good enough for third in the women's long jump. Grace Upshaw of America (6.60m) defeated her teammate Tianna Madison (6.58m) to clinch the gold.

Germaine Mason (2.20m) was beaten into eighth place in the men's high jump. Sweden's Olympic champion, Stefan Holm, leapt 2.33 metres for the victory.
