POWELL
THE WORLD'S fastest man, Asafa Powell, became the third Jamaican track and field athlete to link with a telecommunications provider.
The world 100m record holder recently signed a deal to endorse Cable and Wireless Jamaica's (CWJ) high speed internet service.
In signing the deal, Powell, trained locally by Stephen Francis at the University of Technology (UTech), will be at the forefront of the marketing campaign which is accompanying CWJ's recent roll-out of high-speed internet service packages.
The sprinter, who is now racing against time to be fit for next month's World Athletics Championships in Helsinki, will appear in newspaper, television and internet advertisements to promote the service.
Additionally, his image will be used for billboards, posters, brochures and other printed material. He will also make guest appearances at official CWJ functions and other special events.
The agreement also makes provisions for the establishment of the Asafa Powell Foundation, a charitable organisation which will be run by the sprinter's management team.
Subscribers to CWJ's high speed internet service will have the option to contribute to the foundation when signing up for the service.
Magnus Johnson, CWJ's vice-president, Broadband, said he was elated to have Powell as part of his team.
"Asafa is an exceptionally talented athlete who has distinguished himself by staying a step ahead of the competition in much the same way that Cable & Wireless Jamaica intends to always be ahead of the rest of the market with the high-speed internet service we provide," Johnson said.
"CWJ hopes to have a long and mutually beneficial relationship with Asafa and, like the rest of Jamaica, we are fully behind him and we hope he stays healthy and has a long and successful career," he said.
