Is there a phone policy?
published: Sunday | July 31, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN THE July 28 Gleaner, the Government said it was unable to fulfill a mandate to have over 200,000 new landlines installed due to the preference of Jamaicans for wireless.

What is going on in Jamaica? Do we have a policy or don't we? A country cannot be governed by the wants of the people because wants are short-sighted. It must be governed by the needs of the people.

Sure Jamaicans like their cellphones but how many are still waiting just to have a phone to have at the least dial-up Internet? Dial-up is the cheapest form of access available. The Internet is the future and I believe we just took a step back because of the short-sighted nature of Jamaican politics especially by this administration.

But maybe there is a new move to have wireless Internet available to all in Jamaica at cheaper than dial-up rate. If so why not tell the public so we can purchase the required technology to make the shift from landlines (dial-up) to wireless?

What is the policy of the administration in regards to the implementation of Internet in order for universal access?

This is a question that needs an answer because if there is none then Jamaica will continue to find itself behind the development curve. We Jamaicans want leadership to provide the future direction of the country. We don't need excuses for government short-sightedness and failures.

I am, etc.,
