CALVERT ... won silver in the Girls' 100 metres on Friday night.

WORLD JUNIOR 400-metre silver medallist Sonita Sutherland and Jason Edwards lifted Jamaica's medal tally with third-place finishes on yesterday's second day of the XIII Pan American Junior Championships in Windsor, Canada.

The two bronze medals won yesterday boosted Jamaica's tally at the Championships to seven: one gold, four silver and two bronze.

Sutherland captured her bronze in 52.68 seconds, again beaten by American World Junior champion Natasha Hastings (52.15) and Canadian Carline Muir (52.38).

EDWARDS IMPROVE

In the boys' event, Edwards improved on his semi-final run of 48.66 to pick up bronze in 47.31. The United States' pair of Justin Oliver (46.73) and Nathaniel Anderson (46.91) finished one-two.

Jamaicans Tywayne Buchanan (54.57) and Norbert Miller (55.09) both finished at the back of their respective semi-finals, thus failing to make the cut for the final.

Also bowing out at the semi-final stages were 100m sprinters Jesse Saunders (10.86) and Racive Grant (10.70).

The boys' discus, high jump and girls' discus and 800m final results were not available at press time

Double World Junior 200m silver medallist, Anneisha McLaughlin, will open her championship account today in her farewell run as a junior athlete.

In late action on Friday night, sprinter Schillonie Calvert and Jermaine Jackson added two silver medals to sprint hurdlers Natoya Greaves' (13.38) and Natasha Ruddock's (13.42) quinella run, earlier in the evening.

Calvert defied the odds and snatched the 100m silver in 11.80 seconds. United States' Cleo Tyson won in 11.52 while Colombian Darlenys Oberegon was third in 11.82. Jamaica's Rose-Marie White (12.06) was seventh.

Jackson's silver came in the boys' long jump in which he leapt 7.59 metres, beaten only by one centimetre by United States' Robert Rands (7.60m).

Markino Buckley (14.36) and Sheldon Wilkinson (15.12) placed fourth and eighth respectively in the boys' 110m hurdles final, which was won by Cuban Dayron Robles Planes in a new championship record 13.46.

JOHNSON, REYNOLDS STRUGGLE

In the girls' discus, Shannika Johnson (39.68m) and Phelecia Reynolds (39.61m) were 10th and 11th respectively. Cuban Lisan Rodriguez Alvarez (49.86m) won the event, beating United States' Shanna Dickenson (49.68m).

Jamaica's entries in the boys' shot put, Camoi Hood (17.34m) and Hickel Woolery (16.57m), were fifth and sixth respectively. The US duo Ryan Whiting (19.75m) and Nathan Englin (19.61m) topped the event.

Theon O'Connor ran personal best 1:52.32, but like his 1:53.00 (then PR) at the World Youth Champs, he failed to advance from the semi-finals of the boys' 800m.
