RECENTLY CROWNED Supreme Ventures Super Cup champions Manchester and reigning one-day kings St. Catherine C.C. yesterday made winning starts to the Capital and Credit Limited Overs cricket competition.
Manchester defeated St. Elizabeth by eight wickets at Appleton Estate while St. Catherine registered a comprehensive 166-run win over Portland at Chedwin Park where Dean Morgan stole the spotlight.
Morgan made 106 in the 'Saints' 252 for seven. He received good support from Milton Thomas, 38, Bevan Brown, 33, and Damion Bride, 26 not out.
When Portland batted they were sent packing for 86 as Odean Brown bagged 5-11.
At Appleton, St. Elizabeth batted first and made 99 in 33.5 overs as only Darlington Campbell and Shane Powell, 17 apiece, got into double figures against Andre Dwyer (3-20), David Powell (2-15) and Baris Hutchinson (2-13).
Orville Pennant, 40 and Gary Graham, 28, were Manchester's chief rungetters.
At Nelson Oval, West Indies opener Christopher Gayle compiled a patient 51 off 54 balls in helping Lucas to a three-wicket win over St. Catherine Parish. Gayle's innings included six sixes, four of which he used to bring the curtains down on the game.
Scores: St. Catherine 155-9 (Peter Pottinger 36 and Shawn Beckford 31 against Omar Burke 5-25) and Lucas 157-7 off 37 overs (Gayle 51, Wayne Gayle 30 and Kevin Hinds 24 against Brenton Beckford 4-44).
Wavell Hinds and his Kensington posse had little luck at Kensington Park as they were beaten by 33 runs by Police. The lawmen, who arrived late, were forced to forfeit the toss. They batted first and posted 181-8 in 48 overs as Marvin James scored an even 50 against Ian Dewar 4-14.
In reply, Kensington could only manage 148-9 off their allotment of overs. Marcus Stewart, 36, and Samuel Douglas, 27, were the best batsmen. Hinds made 15.
Meanwhile at Up Park Camp, last year's beaten finalists, the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF), beat Kingston by 114 runs. JDF made 224-8 with Wayne Cuff getting 66 and Mel Wint 58. Andrew Richardson claimed 3-57 and Audley Sanson 2-21.
KINGSTON DISMISSED
But when Kingston batted they were dismissed for 110 as only Gregory Buchanan, 24, Shane Ricketts, 18, and Richardson, 17, got runs against Cuff who claimed 3-22, Kamal Dennis, 2-20, and Howard Copeland, 2-29.
Melbourne also made light work of their opponents at Courtney Walsh Drive as they downed St. Mary by eight wickets to win that game.
St. Mary made 76 off 25.5 overs with Cladius Thompson scoring 21 and extras contributing 20. Sheldon Smith with 3-32 and Leon Bent, 2-21, were Melbourne's top bowlers.
Carlton Baugh Jnr. made an unbeaten 45 in leading Melbourne to victory.
St. Thomas also enjoyed success and this came at the expense of Boys' Town at Collie Smith Drive. St. Thomas made 143 in 42 overs and then dismissed Boys' Town for 109. Steve Logan claimed five for five bowling for St. Thomas.
At Allan Rae Oval, Westmoreland won by three wickets under the Duckworth/Lewis system after rain stopped play with Westmoreland on 127 for seven after 31 overs. Earlier, Clarendon made 148 all out off 28 overs with Dwayne Hearah scoring 50 against Denville McKenzie 4-47 and Myron Wilson 3-8.
At Elgin Town, St. James, led by 81 from Dalton James, beat St. Ann by 95 runs. St. James made 173 all out after 44.1 overs and then bowled St. Ann out for 78. Kelroy Haughton, 4-34, Evroy Dwyer, 2-4, and Dwight Washington, 2-13, shared the bulk of the wickets.
