LETTER OF THE DAY - How the PM can secure his legacy
published: Tuesday | August 2, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

WHO IS responsible for the prime minister's image? Can someone please tell me what Jamaica's domestic agenda is? Where is it published? What is its time line? What are the checkpoints? While I know that not all of Jamaica's plans can be published in the papers, there is absolutely no reason why an overview of the plans cannot be published and updated occasionally when checkpoint goals are met or missed.

Today I read that the legacy of the prime minister is eroding. Well I would like to recommend some ways for him to secure his place in history. Just imagine for a moment ...

'The P J Patterson Jamaica Improvement Plan' - which is a 15- or 20-year plan to improve infrastructure islandwide, such as roads, water, power, telephone, sewage, trash collection and other necessary improvements that will promote economic growth, job creation and improve the quality of life for all Jamaicans.

'The P J Patterson Tax Plan' - a tax reform act that opts Jamaica out of the current tax structure, which is inefficient and unduly burdens the few, and implement a flat tax or fair tax options, both of which are proven to be very effective in every country that tried them.

'The P J Patterson Plan to invest in Jamaica's future leaders'- here he launches a school improvement plan that will insure every school is structurally sound, safe and adequately supplied. It is widely known that Jamaica produces some world-class teachers, many of whom have left the island in search of opportunities and a better standard of living.

'P J Patterson Housing Plan'- forming an alliance with the private sector to build safe and adequate housing for the low-income families. These homes are to be built in deed-restricted communities where the communities themselves set and enforce their own standards for upkeep and security and no more than 10 per cent of the homes are to be occupied by low-income families.

There are many more initiatives the prime minister can make to improve his image and secure his legacy in Jamaica ... Also let's not forget, resigning while he is still on top.

I am, etc.,
