Good work by the FTC
published: Tuesday | August 2, 2005

The Editor, Sir:

SOME YEARS ago, it came to my attention, through the media, that defective dashboards in my vehicle were being replaced by the local agent of an overseas car company. Despite numerous telephone calls and letters to this car dealer, over a period of one and a half years, I was unable to receive any indication that my dashboard would be replaced. During this period, I became aware that certain companies and persons were being given priority in this matter, and despite having been placed on a 'waiting list', it seemed as if I was making no progress at all.

My decision to lodge a complaint with the Fair Trading Commission (FTC) helped to achieve the desired results. Through the FTC's efforts, my dashboard was replaced, and last month I received a letter enclosing monetary compensation, received by the FTC, on behalf of other members of the public with the same complaint.

I write to commend the FTC for its timely and effective action in this matter. I congratulate the FTC for effectively fulfilling its mandate to investigate complaints against unfair business practices and to take action against anti-competitive practices. I can truly attest that I have been served by the commitment to the maintenance and encouragement of competition. The FTC is working to provide equal opportunity for all and to meet the needs of the Jamaican public.

Well done.

I am, etc.,
