No date for start-up work on Falmouth police HQ
published: Tuesday | August 9, 2005

Nagra Plunkett, Staff Reporter

WESTERN BUREAU:

THERE IS uncertainty as to when construction work on the new $220 million police divisional headquarters in Falmouth, Trelawny, will begin because the parish council has not signed off on the building plans.

"At our last council meeting, we were told that the plan was with the Jamaica National Heritage Trust," Falmouth Mayor Jonathan Bartley explained yesterday.

"We give approval based on recommendations by different agencies and the trust is one of them, and with this project, the site for the new police station falls under the preserved area in the town." he said.

Even though it hasn't signed off on the building plans, the parish council has given permission for preparatory work.

During a contract signing ceremony for the facility in January, Minister of National Security, Dr. Peter Phillips, said work was to commence on January 31 and should be completed in 12 months. The contractor of the project is Ashtrom Building Systems Limited.

The ultra-modern facility will consist of offices to house a Crime Investigation Branch, a traffic unit, a radio control unit, canine and marine divisions, holding area for seized vehicles, recreational facilities, a regional remand centre and a cafeteria.
