NEW WORLD champion Justin Gatlin could face world record-holder Asafa Powell in a 100-metre showdown in Sheffield later this month.
Powell, who set the world mark of 9.77 seconds in Athens on June 14, pulled out of the world championships in Helsinki, Finland, with a groin injury.
The Jamaican watched from the stands Sunday as Gatlin ran 9.88 seconds to add the world title to his Olympic gold medal.
Gatlin has decided to switch from the 200 to the 100 for the August 21 meet at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium, organisers said yesterday.
They now hope Powell will accept an invitation to compete, too.
