Solving dispute high on Gordon's agenda
published: Tuesday | August 9, 2005

GORDON

ST JOHN'S, Antigua, CMC

A DAY after being confirmed as president of the West Indies Cricket Board, Ken Gordon has identified the settlement of the ongoing players' dispute as one of his immediate objectives.

This was outlined after Gordon met with his new Board of Directors on Sunday, following his official elevation to the top WICB post.

The dispute between the WICB and the West Indies Players Association raged under former president Teddy Griffith's tenure and resulted in a second string team being sent to Sri Lanka recently.

In addition, Gordon has also pointed to the amelioration of the Board's finances and capturing the International Cricket Council's (ICC) Cricket World Cup as his other immediate objectives.

The retired media magnate said that he believed that all stakeholders in West Indies Cricket should rally around the effort to secure a third victory for the West Indies in the ICC World Cup to be staged in the Caribbean in 2007.

"This effort must bring us all together in the interest of West Indies Cricket. This goal should be motivation enough for us to put aside all differences whatever they may be," Gordon said.

As a result, the WICB says it will establish two ad hoc committees in order to achieve the last two objectives.

Gordon was elected president at the WICB's sixth Annual Meeting on Sunday while Val Banks was re-elected to the post of vice-president for a third term.
