GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC:
LAW ENFORCEMENT officials from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will soon have the opportunity for training under a scholarship programme being offered by Chile, according to the Guyana-based CARICOM Secretariat.
It said that a high-level delegation from Chile's Uniformed Police Agency recently visited the country and that Chile would be providing 70 scholarships worldwide next year for various levels of police training.
The Chilean police team also noted that the scholarship programme offers specialised training in the areas of mountain and border training, drugs and narcotics, investigation of traffic accidents, special police operations, police trainers and VIP protection.
Since the commencement of the International Cooperation Programme for Foreign Uniformed Police Agencies in 1995, more than 600 foreign police from over 25 countries have benefited from the training received under the guidance of the Chilean Ministry of Defence.
NUMEROUS APPLICANTS
The scholarship programme now attracts numerous applicants annually, with 2005 accounting for 194 applications, out of which 78 persons were selected and are now on study in Chile.
The CARICOM Secretariat said the prospectus for the 2006 scholarships, which includes application forms, will be sent to member countries soon.
