$60 million stolen in bizarre 'Ochi' heist
published: Wednesday | August 10, 2005

Devon Evans, Gleaner Writer

OCHO RIOS, St. Ann:

UP TO $60 million was stolen from an armoured courier vehicle in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, yesterday morning.

The daring robbery took place at about 9:20 a.m. while security personnel from Atlas Protection Limited were making their regular drop-off of cash to financial institutions in the resort town. The robbers stole the vehicle with its stock of cash and, though the vehicle was recovered just two hours later, the cash had already been removed.

VEHICLE LEFT UNPROTECTED

According to the police, the incident took place while two security guards were making a drop-off at the Ocho Rios branch of RBTT. One of the guards reportedly went inside the bank while the driver left the vehicle unprotected. Shortly after the vehicle was discovered missing and a report was made to the police.

The police said that, at 11:20 a.m., they received information which led them to the discovery of a dark green Toyota Camry motor car in the Forklands area of Ocho Rios.

Up to last night no arrests had been made. The two security guards were being questioned by senior detectives.

Meanwhile, Deputy Superintendent Kelso Small, crime officer in charge of St. Ann, said police investigations have led them to believe that there was a conspiracy in the staging of the robbery.

DSP Small said the police were continuing to interview witnesses and were also trying to determine the exact amount of money that was stolen.

"It could run into millions of dollars, although some of the money was already distributed to financial institutions in the area," he said.
