TWO GOALS each from Tighana Thompson and Peter Beckford led an under-staffed Kingston team to a 7-0 hiding of visitors St. Mary in the first leg of their quarter-final in the Pepsi Under-15 football competition earlier this week at the Constant Spring Complex.
In a dominant performance, Kingston had the majority of possession as St Mary struggled to put together any form of cohesive attack.
" We beat them last year and we knew we could do it again this year, " Kingston coach Everold Campbell said after the victory. "It was a stroll in the park and I think St Mary was under-prepared."
Under-preparedness may in fact have played a major role in the disparate margin and St Mary's coach Lennon Ellis was not hesitant to admit that.
LACK OF REST
"The team had a very late night and many of them went off to Capleton's show. The lack of rest really took a toll on the team and we did not get a chance to settle for the game. All season we have conceded only two goals - today it was seven," Ellis said.
In other games, St Andrew thrashed Portland 5-1 at Carder Park, alleviating any concerns that the loss of some of their best members to the national team may have had a telling impact on their performance in the quarter-final round.
Elsewhere, South Central qualifiers St Catherine got a leg up in their quarter-final encounter against Hanover when they got by them 2-0 at Watson Taylor Park.
