Smith soars to top of IAAF triple jump rankings
published: Friday | August 12, 2005

SMITH

JAMAICAN WORLD champion Tricia Smith leapt to the top of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) triple jump rankings released earlier this week.

Smith now has 1331 points, which was helped by her three top jumps, 15.11m, 15.03m and 14.91 in Helsinki.

The performance by Smith has pushed her past former No. 1 Tatyana Lebedeva (1327 points) of Russia.

Smith now shares the leading mark, 15.11m with Lebedeva.

This is Smith's first time atop her event. Anna Pyatykh of Russia (1307), Yamilé Aldama of Sudan (1298) and Chryssopigi Devetzi of Greece (1286) round off the top five.

Meanwhile, World Championships finalist Sherone Simpson has replaced Aleen Bailey in the top five of the women's 100m event.

POWELL DETHRONED

Simpson jumped from seventh to fifth with 1298 points for a first time in the top five while Bailey (1292) dropped from fourth to seventh. Veronica Campbell (1326) is still ranked No. 3 behind Christine Arron of France (1354) and American World Champion Lauryn Williams (1341).

World 100m record holder Asafa Powell's (1398) lead atop his event has been cut by Olympic and World Champion Justin Gatlin (1389) of the United States.

Campbell (1363) still leads Allyson Felix (1328) in the women's 200m dash.

Usain Bolt (1253) is 10th on the men's 200m list.
