Blatant censorship of anti-gay views
published: Sunday | August 14, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

IN LIGHT of your story on August 11 titled 'Sumfest penalised for Sizzla's gay bashing', I would like to write a note to the reggae-loving public of Jamaica.

Red Stripe has the right to do whatever they wish with their money, and the public should understand that shows are often affordable and cheaper due to the patronage of corporate sponsors.

This being said, I cringe at the thought of censorship of views which has been argued is held by a vast majority of Jamaicans. If the public really feels strongly about those views, they must be willing to pay more for shows which are not subsidised by corporate sponsors and artistes should be free to express their views. Adults should have the right and freedown to say and listen to whatever they choose.

I am, etc.,
