THE EDITOR, Sir:ON READING the tribute to the retired superintendent of the Wortley Home for Girls, Lucy Holmes, under the heading of 'Dedicated caregiver passes on', I am impelled to add a word of commendation to this extraordinary lady who invested her life and her talents into the lives of the young ladies who came under her care.
I came to know, and to admire Miss Holmes when, as principal of Fitz-Henley's Secretarial Institute, she sent at least three of her Wortley family members to take business courses with us. They all performed creditably, including one who had what appeared to be a polio affliction and who was brought to school every day by the home's van.
If my memory serves me right, it seems that Collette Gillian, who spoke so glowingly of Miss Holmes in the tribute, was also one of our students who was an outstanding performer.
Lucy Holmes, an English lady, lives on in the lives of the Jamaican young ladies who became her family, and for whom she dedicated her life.
I am, etc.,
SAMUEL A. FITZ-HENLEY
