Ja in control against Guyana
published: Sunday | August 14, 2005

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, CMC:

GUYANA MADE pedestrian progress and then lost wickets late in the day to hand Jamaica the initiative on the opening day of their TCL Group West Indies Under 19 third-place play-off match at the Sion Hill Ground yesterday.

The Guyanese, who were asked to take first knock, ended the day on 154 for six off 95 overs sent down by the spin-dominated Jamaica attack.

Opener Richard Ramdeen led the Guyana batting with a top score of 68, and was run out after batting a shade under five hours and facing 252 balls. He struck two fours.

Legspinner Alton Beckford was the best of the Jamaican bowlers with two for 45 from his 29 overs.

LATE START

Play started almost an hour late because of a waterlogged outfield due to overnight rain, but Guyana negotiated the shortened pre-lunch session carefully to reach 30 without loss at the break.

The opening pair of Christopher Barnwell (25) and Ramdeen took the score to 44 before Beckford had Barnwell caught at the wicket.

Beckford then induced Norman Fredericks (six) into a return catch with the score on 59 as Guyana stumbled.

Captain Leon Johnson, who looked to be the only batsman prepared to push the score along, struck three fours in his 34-minute stay at the crease and propelled Guyana to 91 for three before playing on to pacer Omar Brooks for 20.

Gajanand Singh (18) and Ramdeen then added an even 50 for the fourth wicket but both batsmen were dismissed in quick succession as their team lost three wickets for 12 runs in the closing stages.

Meanwhile in the final at Arnos Vale, Barbados, responding to Trinidad and Tobago's first innings of 113, reached 18 for three at the close in another rain-hit match. Play started at 11.06 a.m. after heavy overnight showers caused the outfield to be waterlogged.

SCORES: TRINIDAD 113 (Jason Mohammed 55, Javed Mohammed 24; Jevon Searles 4-12, Shamarh Brooks 3-31, Nicolai Charles 2-21) BARBADOS 18-3 (Rishi Bachan 2).

AT STUBBS GROUND, the Windward Islands, replying to the Leeward Islands first innings of 125, reached 140 for three at the close in their fifth-place play-off. Thirty minutes in the pre-lunch session were lost due to rain.
