LIFESTYLE LIST - 6 ways to spruce up your home
published: Tuesday | August 16, 2005

ARE YOU tired of seeing the same look in your home year after year? You may be thinking that it takes a fortune to redecorate but there are many simple and inexpensive ideas just waiting for you to try. Most Jamaicans wait for Christmas when there are a few more dollars in the wallet. And then, redecorating consists mainly of changing the curtains, bedspreads and bathroom sets. In some cultures, redecorating goes with the changing seasons. However there are some changes that can be made without breaking the bank. This week's Lifestyle List shares six of them with you.

PAINT:

Finally.

Someone has convinced Jamaicans that it's OK to use colours besides bone white on their walls. Transform a room in your house with vibrant hues of red, olives, rich mustard and the range of blues that bring the outdoors within your personal space.

FRESH FLOWERS:

Fresh blooms do a world of good on the dining or coffee table, the bathroom counter, your home office desk or on those special corner tables. You can also use some types of grass, succulents and other greenery that are more long-lasting. Artificial/silk flowers are pretty but fresh flowers mean much more.

WATER FEATURES:

These are popular and can be created to suit the size and décor of your space. The water produces a calming effect and makes a great conversation piece. They can also be custom-made to suit your taste.

THROWS, PILLOWS, RUGS AND CUSHIONS:

When made from the right textured fabric and arranged strategically, these add character to an otherwise boring room. Make use of removable cushion covers to match your moods or seasons of the year. Rugs and carpets do not have to cost a king's ransom and if you are concerned about the environment, try some of the straw and sisal variety. That way we will be supporting the local manufacturers.

CANDLES:

These have come a long way since the days when coloured candles were synonymous with obeah. Scented or unscented, plain or patterned, candles have become a collector's item in some homes and from the kitchen to the bedroom, when placed on the right table, or on the appropriate stand, they add that something extra. Try larger ones under hurricane storm lamp shades or tiny ones in hanging ceramic or metal containers around the perimeter of you patio at night for a romantic feel.

REARRANGE FURNITURE:

Many people cannot be bothered to do this but it's amazing how changing around the furniture in a room can effect a total transformation. Visualise the completed room, talk it over with other members of the family and then get to work.

Also, take some time to watch the Home and Garden channel for more ideas.
