McCarthy stars as Ja secure third
published: Tuesday | August 16, 2005

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC:

JAMAICA, BEHIND a superb all-round performance from Andre McCarthy, romped to a comprehensive nine-wicket victory over Guyana in their TCL Group West Indies Under 19 Challenge third place play-off match at the Sion Hill Ground yesterday.

The diminutive McCarthy was instrumental in bowling out Guyana for a paltry 61 in their second innings by grabbing six wickets with his off-spin, before returning to stroke an unbeaten half century to help his team reach the 119 set for victory, in a century stand with Zaniffe Fowler who also hit an unbeaten half century.

GOOD SUPPORT

McCarthy finished with six for five from eight overs and received good support from left-arm spinner Dennis Bulli, who took three for 10.

He then cracked 57 and shared a 120-run, second wicket stand with Fowler (56), to carry Jamaica to 122 for one.

Guyana, who began their second innings with a useful lead of 57 after dismissing their opponents for 120, looked to be comfortably placed when the score had reached 45 for two.

They however suffered an amazing collapse which saw them lose their last seven wickets for six runs in 12 overs.

FINE POSITION

AT ARNOS VALE: Barbados' batmen will have it all to do on the final day, after their bowlers put them into a fine position yesterday to capture the title.

Chasing 196 for victory, Barbados reached 41 for one at the close, still 155 runs adrift of their target with nine wickets intact, ahead of the fourth day today.

AT SION HILL: The Windward Islands completed a simple six-wicket victory over the Leeward Islands before lunch on the third day of their fifth place play-off yesterday.

Their bowlers took early command as the Leewards, resuming at 169 for seven, were dismissed for 214. Set an easy 42 for victory, the Windwards survived a few hiccups to reach 45 for four.
