MoBay eke out narrow win
published: Tuesday | August 16, 2005

Kwesi Mugisa, Staff Reporter

TEAM MOBAY Tennis were crowned all-island team tennis champions following a 68-63 win over Police Officers Club in the Capital and Credit Securities Limited Trophy final at Eric Bell Tennis Centre on Sunday.

A very closely contested match saw the scores tied at 62-all at the end of regulation play.

Seven singles games had ended with the MoBay team holding a 25-32 advantage. But Police Officers Club came storming back in the doubles games as they ended up with a 37-30 lead, leaving the scores deadlocked.

With the title on the line, the mixed doubles team of Pauline Hylton and Linval Wright were given the responsibility of taking the trophy back to MoBay.

Despite the pressure, they did not disappoint as they routed Lilly Kong and Andrew Lawrence 6-1, much to the delight of their supporters.

Other victories for MoBay came from Linval Wright, who got by Michael Lawrence 6-3, Kashwayne Nelson, who blanked Kenneth Lewis 6-0 and Pauline Hylton, who beat Audrey Marchand 6-2.

This was the second time in seasonal play that the MoBay team got the better of the Police Officers team. In the first round, MoBay won 67-61. MoBay had booked their spot in the final with an 81-44 thrashing of The Pegasus at the Aquasol Theme Park Courts in semi-final play the previous week.

Runners-up Police Officers Club did enough to see off defending champions and favourites Liguanea Club 71-60 in their semi-final at Eric Bell Tennis Centre.

The competition had returned to the island's courts following a six-year break and saw participation of eight teams. Among those participating were Liguanea Club, Oaklands, Police Officers' Club, Tennis Jamaica, UWI, Jamaica Pegasus, Mandeville Racket Club and Montego Bay.
