Gayle bound for County club
published: Wednesday | August 17, 2005

Gayle ... signed by Worcestershire - FILE

LONDON:

WEST INDIES opening batsman Chris Gayle has been signed by English County side Worcestershire for the rest of the season.

Gayle replaces Zander de Bruyn who has been named in the South Africa A squad to tour Sri Lanka next month.

The 25-year-old Jamaican will arrive next week and will be available for four Frizzell County Champion-ship Division Two games and four totesport League matches.

The Pears will hope that left-handed Gayle, who also bowls effective off-spin, will be able to preserve their top-flight status in the 45-over League and boost their chances of promotion in the four-day game.

Gayle has scored seven centuries and averages 39 in 52 Tests while he has also recorded 11 centuries and taken 100 wickets in 120 one-day internationals.

De Bruyn has been a disappointment at New Road in four-day games, recording just one 50 and taking only five wickets in eight County Championship games but has scored six half-centuries in limited overs cricket.
