Trinidad charge to U-19 Challenge final victory
published: Wednesday | August 17, 2005

KINGSTOWN, St Vincent, CMC:

TRINIDAD AND Tobago completed a lopsided victory in the final of the TCL Group West Indies Under-19 Challenge, when they defeated Barbados by a massive 122 runs on the final morning of the four-day match at the Arnos Vale Ground yesterday.

Resuming at 41 for one and still needing a further 155 runs for victory, Barbados shockingly collapsed to 73 all out, losing their last nine wickets for 32 runs in 24.5 overs.

Their batsmen failed to cope with the probing off spin of Sunil Narine and left-arm spinner Rishi Bachan and folded meekly 25 minutes before lunch. Narine ended with figures of six for 26 while Bachan took three for 25 to mastermind Barbados' demise.

"The players came good at crucial times. The spinners headed by Sunil Narine, along with Rishi Bachan and Dane Teelucksingh did a fantastic job," Anthony Gray, the Trinidad and Tobago head coach, said.

"The batting of Adrian Bharath, Kieron Pollard, Marlon Barclay and William Perkins must be noted. All in all it was a good team effort that did the job for us."

Opening batsman Omar Phillip, unbeaten on 20 overnight, top-scored with a fighting innings of 31 and was the only batsman to reach double figures yesterday. Fellow opener Orman Kellman made 14 on Monday.

There was no indication of a collapse when Barbados progressed to 47 for one, in search of 196. However, when Jonathan Carter (1) and Mark Trotman (0) fell to Narine with the score still on 47, the signs of a Barbados collapse appeared.

The dependable Shamarh Brooks provided no heroics this time around as he fell for two with the score on 49 and Jabari Niles was run out for nought, with no addition to the score.

Jevon Searles went without scoring and when opener Phillips was seventh out with the score on 61, the end was in sight for Barbados.
