Security guards in 'Ochi' heist charged
published: Friday | August 19, 2005

Devon Evans, Gleaner Writer

AFTER MORE than a week of investigations, two security guards were charged yesterday in connection with the multimillion-dollar robbery in Ocho Rios, St. Ann.

The two security guards, employed to Atlas Protection Limited, were arrested and charged by acting Detective Inspector Headley Coleman of the St. Ann Criminal Investigation Branch. Each of the guards will face one count of larceny and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery.

They have been identified as Fray Calame, 38, security supervisor, of a Cedar Valley Road address in Kingston, and Gerald Latchman, 43, of a Mansfield Heights address in Ocho Rios.

A THIRD SECURITY GUARD RELEASED

A third security guard who had been held in custody in connection with the robbery has been released.

The charges relate to the theft of more than $6.5 million last Tuesday from two security guards while they were distributing cash to financial institutions in Ocho Rios.

Reports are that while the guards were at the Ocho Rios branch of the RBTT Bank, one of them went inside the bank to make a deposit, and shortly after the other walked into the bank, leaving the vehicle with the money unprotected.

They returned to find the vehicle gone. The matter was reported to the Ocho Rios police.

Two hours later, the car was found in a section of Mansfield Heights, also known as 'Falklands'. But the money had already been removed. The two guards were then taken into custody for questioning.

Last Friday, Calame, the supervisor of the two guards, was also taken into custody. The third security guard reportedly joined the squad just days before the robbery and the police said that there was no strong evidence to link him to the robbery.

The security guards are scheduled to appear before the St. Ann's Bay Resident Magistrate's court today.
