Stupid, unlawful policemen

THE EDITOR, Sir:
IT IS surprising to see the blatant stupidity of so many members of our nation's security force. In recent months there have been numerous arrests of police officers involved in corruption, with the most common type being bribery. One would think that after the first two or three arrests, the other culprits would cease the practice of their 'witty craft'. But is that expecting too much from our grossly underpaid, hardworking policemen and women?
Is this unlawful practice due to greed or need? Many may say that if the Government were to give in to their wage increase demands, then our society would not be faced with this problem. But how true is this? On the contrary, will any civil servant ever be satisfied with their earnings; will the pay ever be enough? Integrity, however, should never be displaced especially by those chosen to serve, protect and reassure us.
It is my opinion that irrespective of their work load, meagre pay package or any other job related stress they may have, corruption of any sort must not be tolerated. Without a doubt, these 'unlawful lawmen' will take advantage of any loopholes in the system that will allow them to take advantage of citizens and taint the good name of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. Hence, it is commendable that the police hierarchy sees it fit to clamp down on these crime fighting criminals.
