PNP's delegates' list swells
published: Sunday | August 21, 2005

Omar Anderson, Gleaner Writer

THE PEOPLE'S National Party (PNP) is predicting a large 67th annual conference next month, because its delegates' list has more than doubled since last year.

Deputy General Secretary Colin Campbell told The Sunday Gleaner last week that a total of 5,000 delegates will attend this year's conference compared to 2,000 last year.

"There was a group rebuilding programme going apace over the last two years," he said. "It's (this year's conference) going to be a lot bigger."

Mr. Campbell added that upcoming events within the party would have activated some groups which he said had "gone into abeyance".

The PNP deputy general secretary fended off suggestions that the phenomenal increase in the delegate base this year could fuel speculations that some of the groups added this year were fictitious.

"We enforced all the provisions of the [PNP] constitution including the requirement for all groups to keep annual general meetings," Mr. Campbell said.

Additionally, he stated that the party's secretariat this year audited 17 constituencies which together submitted more than 20 new groups last year.

"These groups were okay," he told The Sunday Gleaner. "I don't think we found any fake ones."
