Wrong message to our youth
published: Sunday | August 21, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:I AM a young man living abroad who loves my country and would like to see its success. I am very concerned about the rise of HIV and AIDS in Jamaica.

I believe that our young men and women are being fed the wrong message. Our young boys are told that to be a man you must have multiple partners and many babies. Alternatively our young women are being told that having a child and depending on a man gives them status in life. I believe that the media and entertainment industry send the message that promiscuity is a noble thing that gives young men and women power and status.

The most important thing for young people should be to get an education, finding one partner who you love and respect and building a foundation with that one person.

Let us start sending the right message to our young people. Get an education, find one partner that you love, start a family and contribute to your country.

I am, etc.,
