published: Monday | August 22, 2005

JAMAICA, LED by Marvin Essor's lone gold medal, ended the 2005 World University Games in Turkey in 31st position after pocketing three medals.

Jamaica's tally of one gold, one silver and a bronze landed them way behind the top five teams, led by Russia with 26G, 16S, 23B (65 overall).

China 19G, 16S, 11B (46); Japan 18G, 18S, 20B (56); Ukraine 18G, 15S, 18B (51); and the United States 16G, 12S, 13B (41) rounded off the top five teams at the 12-day Games which ended yesterday.

Essor's success came with a Jamaican one-two in the men's 400m. Essor took the event in 45.99 ahead of Dwayne Barrett (46.14).

The two finished ahead of Yuki Yamaguchi of Japan, who took third in 46.15.

Essor had earlier qualified for the final with a 46.75 seconds clocking while winning his semi-final, while Barrett won his in 46.56.

In the 400m hurdles, Gregory Little of the University of Technology took bronze in a personal best 49.77 seconds. He was beaten by the Japanese pair of Kenji Narisako (48.96) and Takayuki Koike (49.75).

Little, who had earlier finished fourth in the first round in 51.38 seconds but advanced as one of the fastest losers, returned to run 50.47 for third in Semi-final Two.

Kerron Stewart and Orion Nicely failed to advance to the medal round of the 100m event; so too did Peta-Gaye Beckford in the women's long jump.

The World University Games included sporting disciplines such as football, diving, athletics, basketball, gymnastics, fencing, wrestling, archery, water polo, tae kwon do, tennis, volleyball, sailing and swimming.
