Jamaica at war

THE EDITOR, Sir:
WITH REFERENCE to the article - 'Life behind the garrisons', The Gleaner, August 15, 2005 - What a total and utter shame that our politicians have created such an environment that these poor people have been robbed of their human rights, freedom of speech, the right to decent accommodation, transportation, sanitation and security. As is often the case, the 'hoodwinked' are standing staunchly behind those perpetrating this fraud on them.
Ignorance is the greatest crime that a society can perpetrate on its people and we have all stood by and watched our society deteriorate. Jamaica today, I am ashamed to say, is no better than Iraq or Afghanistan. If you believe this is not the case then try driving into any of the 12 neighbourhoods that writer Garwin Davis referred to in his article. Jamaica is at war with itself and our politicians have fuelled this by not only allowing it to happen, but more importantly, by ensuring it happens so they can retain power.
I guess the question I asked myself which led me to write this letter was whether the Jamaican political leadership was any better than Saddam Hussein, Idi Amin, George Bush or any of the other despots around the world.
I am, etc.,
