APM TERMINALS (Jamaica) Limited, in its commitment to the development of the Jamaican maritime industry, has joined in sponsoring the Maritime Awareness Week quiz competition.

Details will be published in Youthlink magazine of the Tuesday Gleaner during the month of September.

During the third week of September of each year, the local shipping industry takes the opportunity to educate the wider community about the maritime industry through various activities. These activities are organised by a committee drawn from the shipping industry and spearheaded by the Maritime Authority of Jamaica.

Committee members represent the Caribbean Maritime Institute, the Shipping Association of Jamaica, the Ministry of Transport and Works, the Port Authority of Jamaica, the Jamaica Defence Force Coastguard, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kingston Wharves Limited, Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Marine Police.

The local maritime celebration has its genesis in the International Maritime Organisation's (IMO) World Maritime Day, which will be celebrated on September 29.

This year, the committee continues its education of the younger generation through the quiz competition on various aspects of the shipping industry. The shipping industry is a dynamic sector and offers many opportunities for further studies and employment, which are not known to a wide cross-section of the population. The quiz competition should serve to pique curiosity about the shipping industry.

It will run for four weeks during September and weekly prizes will be given to winners. The competition will culminate on World Maritime Day with the drawing of the grand prize contributed by APM Terminals (Jamaica) Limited.

Other sponsors of the competition are Burger King, Popeyes and Bling-Bling. Check out The Gleaner's Youthlink for details.
