ST JOHN'S, Antigua, CMC:

WEST INDIES head coach Bennett King has been appointed chairman of the West Indies Cricket Board's Win World Cup Committee, that also includes cricketing legend Sir Garfield Sobers and batting star Brian Lara.

Former West Indies skipper Clive Lloyd, who lost the race to become vice president of the WICB recently, had originally been invited to be chairman of the committee but turned down the offer due to heavy overseas commitments.

HOLDING DECLINED INVITATION

Michael Holding, the former West Indies fast bowler, also declined an invitation to be a member of the committee for the same reason.

The committee will also comprise former West Indies fast bowler, Courtney Walsh; former West Indies opening batsman and WICB director, Desmond Haynes; along with former West Indies wicketkeeper and former chairman of selectors, Michael Findlay.

The formation of the committee was announced recently by new WICB president Ken Gordon with the aim of producing a winning team for the World Cup to be played in the Caribbean in 2007.

The committee is expected to "address the more comprehensive development of players; to develop the physical and mental toughness which will deliver a consistent standard of excellence on and off the field; to deliver in conjunction with head coach Bennett King, a programme of preparation that will deliver the targeted results."
