Upsets galore at Wata Amateur Champs
published: Wednesday | August 24, 2005

THERE WERE upsets galore as the Wata Amateur Tennis Championship, the second event of the five tournament Trafalgar points series, came to a close on Sunday at the Liguanea Club, New Kingston.

The tournament saw new champions crowned in every category played, causing a leap-frog effect in the rankings held coming into the tournament.

The men's Class One category saw a focused Dwayne Pagon rebound from a disappointing quarter-final exit in the previous Trafalgar tournament to make a meal of the 16th ranked Kristofer Martin 6-1, 6-1 to lift the title.

Pagon had experienced a bit of sweet revenge when he knocked off No. 2 ranked Tyler Chin in the semi-finals.

In Class Two, No. 6 seed Andrew Lowe battled from a set down to score a satisfying 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 upset over the top ranked Douglas Kong. Lowe had previously upstaged No. 5 seeded Allan McNab in the semi-finals.

The women's Open category saw top junior Danielle Monteith eliminate Raquel Bryan 6-3, 6-3.

The men's Class Three category saw the unseeded Arnold Douglas emerge victorious as he got by Ruddy Chin 7-6, 6-3. In Class Four, newcomer Jermey Creswell defeated Clive Smith 6-2, 7-6 to claim the top honour.
