Killing with impunity
published: Thursday | August 25, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

THAT TWO men were able to walk into a school, in the middle of the day and kill the principal conjures up images of the lawless American West where vigilantes and vagrants pillaged and killed with impunity. Who among us can claim to be safe if even a principal in the process of enrolling young children is not? Who can ordinary Jamaicans turn to for protection? Do all of our faiths hang in such a delicate balance where the odds of getting hit my a motor car are equal to that of being brutally stabbed while standing in your office?

I know that I am not breaking news when I say the state of security in our country is positively correlated to the general state of our union - both are on a downward trajectory. I am without answers as it relates to where we go from here.

People like the St. Mary principal are what some refer to as collateral damage, or a part of the causalities that are bound to happen when a society is at war. We are an island nation with limited ports of entry that can be monitored and controlled by the Government. If they want to reduce the importation of guns and bullets, they can do so.

I am, etc.,
