Students receive scholarships from Blue Cross
published: Thursday | August 25, 2005

Jamaica Red Cross president Oswald Burchenson accepts a cheque from Gleaner's Corporate Affairs Manager Karin Cooper on behalf of the Cayman Red Cross. Following Hurricane Ivan last September, The Gleaner published a special Cayman Edition to assist with the restoration of the communication process after the hurricane ravaged the islands. The cheque represents part proceeds from the publication. The presentation took place at the Gleaner's North Street office in Kingston on Monday. - NORMAN GRINDLEY/DEPUTY CHIEF PHOTOGRAPHER

IT WAS a happy occasion yesterday when 21 students were presented with five-year scholarships from Blue Cross of Jamaica.

The students, who will all be starting high school next month, received the scholarships for their success at the GSAT examinations.

TOTAL VALUE

The total value of the scholarships is $1.6 million. Cheques were handed over to the youngsters yesterday at a ceremony held at Eden Gardens on Lady Musgrave Road, St. Andrew. The successful students are children of Blue Cross staff members as well as dependents of subscribers.

In order to have the scholarships renewed annually, the students must maintain at least a 75 per cent average, in addition to receiving good conduct certificates from their school principals.

Professor Errol Morrison, president and chief executive officer (CEO) of Blue Cross of Jamaica, urged the students to make the most of their studies. He reminded them that education is a privilege, adding that much is expected of them in the future.

The Blue Cross of Jamaica scholarship programme was introduced 12 years ago.
