Campbell tops 100m rankings
published: Thursday | August 25, 2005

( L - R )CAMPBELL and SMITH

MONACO, CMC:

JAMAICA'S OLYMPIC champion Veronica Campbell has taken over the position as the world's number one sprinter, in the latest IAAF world rankings released this week.

After Campbell's 10.85 seconds personal best clocking in her victory at the Zurich Golden League on Friday, the speedy 23-year-old displaced France's Christine Arron at the top of the 100m ranking.

Campbell, however, has slipped from the No. 1 position in the 200m after finishing fourth in the 200m at the recent World Championships. Nineteen-year-old World Champion, American Allyson Felix, has taken over the lead in that event after her most recent triumph at the Norwich Union Grand Prix in Sheffield on Sunday.

After his victory in Sheffield on Sunday, St. Kitts and Nevis sprinter Kim Collins jumped to fifth in the 100m rankings, while American world sprint double champion Justin Gatlin moved closer to Jamaican Asafa Powell at the top of the standings.

BECKFORD MOVES UP

In the women's 400m, American Sanya Richards also edged closer to Tonique Williams-Darling at the top of the standings with her pair of victories over the Bahamian World and Olympic champion at the weekend.

Jamaicans Kemel Thompson and James Beckford also made upward movements in the 400m hurdles and long jump standings respectively.

Thompson moved one place to fifth in the distance hurdles while Beckford is now ninth in the horizontal leap.

Jamaican World Champion Trecia Smith lost her top spot in the triple jump to Olympic champion Tatyana Lebedeva, who defeated her in Zurich last Friday.

Smith is now in second after moving into pole position with her Helsinki triumph.
