TODAY's 10-race programme at Caymanas Park is surprisingly without a trophy, but the 3-y-o and up overnight allowance race over 1200 metres will more than likely take the spotlight as not only the most valuable on the card, but the most competitive.
The main hopefuls in the 13-strong field are BATTLEOX, SWEET SOUTHERNGAL, GIRL IN GOLD, INSATIABLE, DIESEL and the stable-companions PRECOCIOUS MISS D and SPANISH SECRETS.
Trainer Gary Subratie holds a strong hand with the American bred fillies PRECOCIOUS MISS D and SPANISH SECRETS, both of whom ran well in defeat last time out.
PRECOCIOUS MISS D made a brave bid in the RJR Classic over 1800 metres on July 30, a race in which she finished 2-3/4 lengths third after going through at the home turn, before giving way to the winner EXPLOSIVE PEAK a furlong out.
The three-year-old bay filly by Precocity out of Danalot Miss will be seen to better advantage over this reduced trip and must have a grand chance from her convenient mark of 53.5kg, especially with in-form champion apprentice Paul 'Country' Francis aboard.
PRECOCIOUS MISS D has good speed and has also shown a capacity to come from just off the pace if the situation demands.
SPANISH SECRETS, who is highly thought of at home, failed by three-quarter length at long odds to catch NASATOL on August 6 and, if anything, will report even better for this race, having been kept on the move at exercise.
This four-year-old filly, who won three races in the United States, is even better suited to the round course and back in action from the lenient mark of 52.0 kg, can definitely go one better.
SPANISH SECRETS had fellow American SWEET SOUTHERN GAL just behind her in third last time out and it should be pretty close between them once again.
That was Southern Gal's first positive effort in six previous starts and now pointed in the right direction, should not for an instance be taken lightly.
The chestnut filly from the stables of champion trainer Philip Feanny continues to move sweetly at exercise, galloping 5-1/2 furlongs in a brisk 1:06.1 on Monday, August 15. She followed up with a five-furlong gallop in a minute flat on Sunday, August 21.
Also expected to go close are the Richard Azan-trained BATTLEOX, who failed by half a length to catch the much-improved KINGSTONIAN over the distance on July 23 and the Wayne DaCosta's imported filly GIRL IN GOLD, who was not disgraced behind EXPLOSIVE PEAK in the RJR Classic on July 30.
Prior to that, GIRL IN GOLD won in a fast time over 1400-metres (1:25.3) and with the distance right up her street, could resume winning ways with in-form Charles Hussey aboard.
It should be close among the trio of SWEET SOUTHERNGAL, PRECOCIOUS MISS D and SPANISH SECRETS.
The free running PREOCIOUS MISS D gets the nod.
Other firm fancies on the card are the recent winner EMMVEEPEE to stave off KERMIT in the 5th race over 1100 metres, MEDICAL SOCA with former champion jockey Wesley Henry aboard to turn the tables on MR. SHINE in the 6th, OLYMPIC STAR to hold the straight specialist LADY BALARI at bay in the 8th and VISCOSITY to upstage ABUELO and AIR SPEED in the the closing straight five race.
