CSEC WHIZ-KIDS - High achiever racks up seven distinctions
published: Tuesday | August 30, 2005

MONCRIEFFE

BASED ON his outstanding performance in the 2005 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations, Derrick Moncrieffe, a student of Kingston College, has gained seven distinctions and two credits.

A cheerful Moncrieffe told The Gleaner yesterday that he was disappointed when he got the news of his performance because he was aiming for Grade I in all nine subjects. He noted, however, that when he realised that he got top marks in some of the subjects that he had weaknesses in, he was brimming with joy.

The 17-year-old, who stands six feet four inches tall, attributes his success to his father, Derrick Moncrieffe Sr. According to him, his father, a compliance officer at the Inland Revenue Department, has been his tower of strength. "He gave me a very important foundation from primary and basic school," he said.

Derrick, who resides in Willowdene, Spanish Town, will be pursuing physics, chemistry, mathematics and communication studies at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) level. He starts sixth form in September.

An avid lover of basketball and high jump, Derrick said that his philosophy is: "Never give up, just try your best."

He got distinctions in English language, English literature, geography, mathematics, mechanical engineer technology, physics and technical drawing and credits (Grade II) for chemistry and information technology.
