LETTER OF THE DAY - Paradise regained after pothole mishap
published: Tuesday | August 30, 2005

THE EDITOR, Sir:

ON SATURDAY, August 20, I was travelling from Ocho Rios to St. Elizabeth in the evening with my young daughter and cousin.

About six miles from Brown's Town, my car fell into a pothole and the tyre punctured.

Imagine my horror being in the dark, two women with a young child with no houses or shops in sight and a very long way from home.

Both my cousin and I are 'young' returning residents who were really afraid of what might or could happen to us on such a lonely road.

However, to cut a long story short the following people have renewed my faith.

Many thanks to T.C., the mini-bus driver who stopped and helped us, called a wrecker service to get us into the town. He even called back after leaving us to check if we were fine and, most importantly, reassured us that good people lived in the area and no harm would come to us.

To Delroy Rogers who took us on the wrecker to Browns Town, stayed with us while we got the tyre repaired; to Irvin and the young lady who found us a tyre repair man who had already finished work for the day, but went back to his shop on receiving a phone call and waited until we got there.

Jamaica, already paradise in my eyes, would be an even nicer country if more people and incidents like these hit the press instead of the murders every day.

It is such a shame that crime seems to be destroying this beautiful place, but even in the depths of the horror, here is proof that there are still kind, helpful people who are willing to go above and beyond the call of duty to help others in distress. This is the Jamaica I fell in love with.

To my three 'knights in shining armour' who drove all the way from St.Elizabeth to Brown's Town to follow me home, I love you. Thanks again.

Let the good, decent, honest hard working people of Jamaica stand firm and strong; good must and will conquer evil.

I am, etc.,

SANDRA SCOTT
